What Our CQC Rating Means for You

Understanding a provider’s CQC rating can help you choose care with confidence. When you’re choosing a home care provider, it can be hard to know who to trust. Every company will tell you they offer excellent care, so how can you tell for sure? One of the most useful places to look is the provider’s rating from the Care Quality Commission, or CQC.

Dignicare is rated Good overall by the CQC. Here’s what that means, how ratings work and how you can use them to make an informed choice.

Who are the CQC?

The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. Every home care provider must be registered with the CQC, and the CQC inspects services to check they meet the standards people have a right to expect.

Inspectors look at records and policies, speak to staff, and, importantly, talk to the people who receive care and their families. Their findings are published in a report that anyone can read.

The five key questions

The CQC judges every service against five key questions. They ask whether a service is safe, meaning people are protected from abuse and avoidable harm. They ask whether it’s effective, so that care and support achieve good outcomes and help people maintain a good quality of life.

They also ask whether a service is caring, with staff treating people with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. They look at whether it’s responsive, meaning services are organised to meet each person’s individual needs. Finally, they ask whether it’s well led, with leadership and management that support high quality, person centred care.

These questions sit at the heart of how we work every day, not just when an inspector visits.

What the ratings mean

Services are given one of four ratings: Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement or Inadequate. A Good rating means the service is performing well and meeting the CQC’s expectations across the areas inspected.

Ratings are given for each of the five key questions as well as overall, so it’s worth reading beyond the headline. The full report gives a much richer picture of what a service is really like.

Our CQC rating

We’re proud to be rated Good by the CQC. It reflects the hard work of our carers and office team, and the trust families across Ilkley, Bingley, Skipton and the surrounding areas place in us. You can read our full CQC report to see the inspectors’ findings for yourself.

A rating is a snapshot, though, and we never see it as the finish line. We’re always looking for ways to improve, listening to feedback from the people we support and their families, and investing in our team.

How to use CQC reports when choosing care

When you’re comparing providers, look at the overall rating first, then read the sections that matter most to you. If you’re worried about safety, read what inspectors said about how risks are managed. If kindness and respect are your priority, look closely at the caring section.

It’s also worth checking the date of the most recent inspection and reading any comments from people who use the service. Then use what you’ve learned to ask questions when you speak to providers. A good provider will be happy to talk openly about their report.

Beyond the rating

A CQC report can tell you a lot, but meeting the people who’ll provide care tells you even more. That’s why we always start with a relaxed conversation at home, as explained in our guide to your first home care assessment. You can also meet our team online and read about what dignity in care means to us.

If you’re comparing providers, we’d always encourage you to look at each one’s CQC rating alongside their full report, and to ask plenty of questions.

Frequently asked questions

How often is a CQC rating updated?

A CQC rating is updated after each inspection. How often inspections happen varies, so it is worth checking the date on any CQC rating you look at.

Where can I check a provider’s CQC rating?

You can search for any provider on the CQC website to see their current CQC rating and read their full report.

Is a CQC rating the only thing to consider?

No. A CQC rating is a helpful snapshot, but meeting the team, asking questions and reading feedback from families all help you choose the right care.
