Starting care work with no experience is more common than you might think. Thinking about a career in care but worried you don’t have the right experience? You’re not alone. Many brilliant carers started with no background in care at all. They came from retail, hospitality, office work, or straight from school or college, and discovered they had exactly the qualities that matter most.
If you’re kind, reliable and enjoy helping people, a career in home care could be closer than you think.
Can you start care work with no experience?
Not necessarily. Experience is always welcome, but the most important qualities in a carer can’t be taught on a course. Compassion, patience, good humour and a genuine interest in people are what make someone great at this job.
Practical skills, such as helping someone move safely or supporting them with medication, are things you learn. What’s harder to teach is the warmth that makes someone feel comfortable and respected in their own home.
Skills you may already have
Many everyday skills transfer well into care. If you’ve worked in customer service, you’ll know how to stay calm, listen and put people at ease. If you’ve looked after children, a relative or a friend, you’ll understand what it means to care for someone. Time management, communication and problem solving are all valuable too, whatever job you learned them in.
Life experience counts as well. Many people come into care later in life, bringing maturity, understanding and a wealth of experience that the people they support really value.
Training for new carers
In England, new care workers usually complete the Care Certificate, a nationally recognised set of standards covering the essentials of safe, high quality care. It includes topics such as dignity and privacy, communication, safeguarding, health and safety, and infection prevention. You can find out more about it from Skills for Care.
Alongside formal training, new carers learn a great deal by working with experienced colleagues and getting to know the people they support.
What checks are needed?
Because carers work with people who may be vulnerable, anyone starting a care role will need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. References from previous employers or education are also usually requested. These checks help keep everyone safe and are a standard part of joining any care provider.

If you’re considering care work with no experience, the best thing you can do is get in touch and ask questions. A good employer will be happy to explain what the role involves and how new carers are supported.
It also helps to think about why you’re drawn to care. Perhaps you’ve supported a relative, enjoy spending time with older people or simply want work that feels meaningful. Whatever your reason, sharing it in your application helps employers see the person behind the CV, and that matters far more than a list of previous job titles.
