A career in care can take you further than you might expect. A job in care isn’t just a job. For many people, it’s the start of a long and rewarding career. Adult social care offers more routes for progression than many people realise, from becoming a senior carer to managing a whole service, or using your experience as a stepping stone into nursing or other health roles.
Here’s a look at where a career in home care can take you.
Starting your career in care as a care worker
Most care careers begin with a role as a care worker or home carer. In England, new carers usually complete the Care Certificate, which covers the essential standards of safe, compassionate care. This is where you build the foundations: getting to know the people you support, learning practical skills and developing confidence. If you’re new to care, our guide to starting a career in care with no experience explains more.
Building your qualifications
Once you’ve found your feet, many carers choose to work towards recognised qualifications, such as Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in adult care. These deepen your knowledge in areas like person centred care, communication, safeguarding and supporting people with specific conditions.
Qualifications can open the door to more responsibility and are valued right across the health and care sector. Skills for Care has useful information on qualifications and learning in adult social care.
Specialising in an area you love
As your experience grows, you may find there’s an area of care you’re particularly drawn to. Some carers specialise in supporting people living with dementia, while others focus on end of life care, complex care or supporting people with physical disabilities. Specialising can make your work even more rewarding, as you develop real expertise in helping people with particular needs. You can read about supporting people at home in our posts on dementia care and dignity at the end of life.
Moving into senior and supervisory roles
Experienced carers often progress into senior carer or team leader roles. These involve supporting and mentoring newer colleagues, helping with care plan reviews and being a point of contact when situations need a little extra expertise.
From there, some move into office based roles such as care coordinator, organising visits and making sure everyone gets the right support at the right time, or field care supervisor, carrying out assessments and checking that care is being delivered to a high standard.
Management and leadership
For those who want to lead, the path can continue into management. A registered manager is responsible for the quality and safety of a whole service and is the person the Care Quality Commission works with directly. Many registered managers started out as carers themselves, and their front line experience is one of their greatest strengths. Leadership roles usually involve further study, such as a Level 5 qualification in leadership and management for adult care.
A stepping stone into health careers
Care experience is also highly valued if you’re considering a move into nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy or other health professions. Time spent in care gives you a real understanding of people’s needs and the confidence to support them, which stands out on any application.
However far you want to go, a career in care offers something many jobs can’t: the knowledge that your work genuinely improves people’s lives every single day.
